Experimentations with Batik
Projects surrounding Batik.
The first project is a self portrait piece and the second one is a sculptural piece.
The self-portrait is an experimentation on redefining batik patterns in the present as a tool for self-representation. Batik patterns in the past tell stories and represent the maker or receiver’s identity. The piece was created digitally, printed on silk paper, stitched on a larger cloth, and accompanied with a list of linoprint patterns and its definitions. The digital and traditional methods of these pieces juxtapose traditional batik making and modern batik making.
The book is a piece created in conjunction with my research paper on how textiles can be of importance to a country. I wanted to mimic the process, material, and techniques of batik making while making the book.
